A truly touching war-date, ink inscribed, 2pp. 8vo., Confederate soldier’s letter written by an unknown soldier, Wilmington, N. C., July 20, 1863, to his wandering wife concerning a total breakdown in his faith in the Southern cause, in part: “…my Regt went to Charleston SC and they are nearly all killed & taken prisoners…we are expecting this place to be attacked everyday…I want the Yankees to take me prisoner & parole me & let me go home…take care of my gun let no one have it…the 26 Regt is a bout all killed in Maryland. If you will go back home I will build you a house as soon as the war is over…you have killed me…you have just gone off & left my things to be destroyed. Cathy you know that I love you & my children But lord I must give you all up. I don’t expect to rite no more…”. Worthy of further research since this soldier’s regiment was apparently involved in the defense of Battery Wagner against the 54th Mass. (Colored) Vols. Light damp stains along right margins with negligible paper loss at folds, else very good.
