Autogrph Document Signed, W.H. Pate, 1p. oblong octavo, Abuydon, Virginia, December 20, 1864, addressed to J.C. Breckenridge Maj. Gen. Comdg. Dep. SW Va & E. Tenn. and reads in part: “...It being impossible to procure by pruchase either Alcohol or proof spirits, my only opportunity of obtaining a supply is by distillation. I ask the privilege of distillation by Authority of 16 gallons double proof rye whiskey. I wish it soley for Medicinal or pharmaceutical purposes...” Irregular right margin. VG.
