Manuscript telegram, 1p. oblong octavo, Head Quarters Starksville, February 19, 1864, issued on the behalf of Nathan Bedford Forrest, to General Ruggles, Columbus, Mississippi, and reads: “Will send a Brigade of Cavalry to Columbus immediately have all the boats brought down from Colten Gen to Columbus and a pontoon constructed to pass them over at Columbus. Have sent Capt. Mate with an Engineer Corps to assist you. Am moving a Brigade of Cavalry this morning to Aberdeen also...” VG. Union General Grierson's raiders came through Oktibbeha County in the spring of 1863 and looted Starkville. Another Union raid the following year was turned back just south of West Point by General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
