Autograph Letter Signed, 2p. folio, Charlottesville, Virginia, August 16, 1864, addressed to William Pollack, and reads in part: “...In regard to the sale of some of the secondary bonds to raise the sum of $7000, I would suggest that as all of the bonds (and other securities) are commanding less than their cost, taht it would probably be better to borrow...I have enclosed herwith a stock note...you can sign and return to me by some safe hand going to Richmond or by mail to this place if your uncertain that mail communication is again opened..which has I suppose been interrupted by the recent quarrel between the President of the Central Rail Road and the Post Master General...If I see a chance by the underground rail road (which sometimes I do) I will ascertain from him, down to what period he has paid the interest...I think it would be best to sell the cotton bond as they could be sold by delivery...” VG.
