Autograph Letter Signed, William S. Gibbons (1842-1931) VMI graduate, 10th Va & 39th Va, and a member of Lee’s Scouts Guides, Couriers, & Bodyguards. POW while on scout July 9, 1864 at Hedgeville, West Virginia, 6p. 2-1/2”x4-1/4”, pencil, Camp SG&C, May 9, 1864, addressed to his father in Rome,Georgia. Good content pertaining to the Battle of Spotsylvania with account of a negro soldier being shot. In part: “...I am safe & well, though I have been in some very warm places. Henry Shocklette was wounded Thursday throug hthe right lung, his wound is not considered dangerous...Father this has been one of the hardest fought battles that ever took place on this continent. Our loss has been very slight. The Yankees acknowledge that they ahve almost been annihilated. This fight will close the war. Thank fortune. Col. Warren was killed the first days fight. The 10th suffereed very slightly & have captured 6 thousand prisoners, one negro & he was taken out & shot. I have no horse yet...I have to go to the front to capture one. I expect to succeed to day as we expect to rout them. We will have a big fight to day...The Rome light Guards suffered very slightly...” VG.
