Autograph Letter Signed, “W.R. Pixley” 6th Georgia Infantry State Troops, 4p. octavo, September 2, 1864, The Macon & W.R.R. , Near Lovejoy Station, in part: “...The raiders seem to be a pest to you and I fear they may prove to be the same to all. We have had severe fighting on the 31st and 1st at Jonesborough. The main object of the enemy was to cut off Atlanta by taking possession of the Macon & Wester R.R. It was supposed the Yanks were retreating, that Wheeler had cut his communications in his rear and retreat was the only alternative, but while we thought the foe retreating, he was flanking our left & fortifying himself in the immediate vicinity of R.R. at Jonesborough. We fought them two days, but they proved to be too powerful and we had to leave and fall back as usual...The majority of the troops consider Atlanta is gone up...our army is cut in two & we (Hardee’s Corps) has fallen back to this place to prevent capture. If Atlanta is given or gone up as many think it is we are in bad fix...” Fine.
