Letter by Overton Steger, 21st Virginia Infantry, though not signed - complete, 4p. octavo, April 23, 1864, Picket Camp near Mortons Ford, with cover, in part “This mornign there was a pretty brisk cannonading for sometime going on some distance up the river....Mr. Grant I reckon is getting too popular for Lincoln and he wishes Gen. Lee to take him down which I believe by the help of Providence will be done. Several of our soldiers have deserted and gone over to the Yankees this week. How low and degraded those wretches must feel...Isn’t the news encouraging from North Carolina? Gen’l Lee forwarded the communication around to the troops as soon as it was received by him...” Fine.
