A rare war-date Confederate officer’s 3pp. 8vo., ink inscribed letter written by Capt. Samuel P. Inks, Co. H, 15th Ark. (N. W.) Inf. “Murfreesboro, Pike Co., Arkansas, April 4, 1864 to a female friend concerning operations during the beginning of the Red River Campaign, and the affect of war upon his regiment and family, in part: “…I had a cold and lonesome trip back to my command…arrived in camp on the evening of three of our best soldiers since then we have buried one more. All died of congestion of the brain…Cousin Jimmie…is now with Capt. Brown who is with Cabell’s Brigade. I am at this place with a picket of about twenty five men. The brigade had a skirmish with the enemy…in which our company participated killing four Federals and loosing none some slight wounds being the only casualties. Our boys are in fine spirits…Capt. Buchanan and his brother were murdered by the Indians. My Cousin Eve Hagood was banished as an enemy of the Federal Government. She was sent no further than Van Buren …several of our company have runaway and gone to Washington County…I am nearly as tired of South Arkansas as you are of Texas…”. Inks was captured during the battle of Elkhorn Tavern, AR. April 8, 1862, and sent to Johnson’s Military prison, OH. After being exchanged he served the remainder of his time in the Trans-Mississippi. Overall a very rare letter from the Trans-Mississippi, since Confederate letters from this region are seldom seen in the marketplace. Split at the centerfold with some spotting, else very good.
