War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on rare patriotic stationery bearing a portrait of Gen. Thomas W. Sherman, by Pvt. Everett W. Miner, Co. C, 7th New Hampshire Vols., St. Augustine, Florida, Jan. 26, 1863, in part: "…there is a rumor that [Col. Haldimand] Put[nam] has been promoted Brig. Gen. and Abbott Colonel…the men all hope Put will not be removed. Genl. Foster's expedition is at Port Royal. They have been there over a week. Hunter & Foster are in a little row. The former wants…5,000 troops out of the latter's division…Foster will not stand it and has gone to Washington…and the men have been cooped up in transports in Port Royal Harbor for over a week…". Also included is a partial four-page letter dated March 6, 1863 in which Miner gives a good account of sailing upon the St, Johns river and trying to get to an abandoned planation house, in small part: "…I am going to give a little account of a voyage I had the other day. I and George Emerson drummer of Co. band, Osmon Webster…hired us a sail boat and…got us a pass from Old Capt. Durgin to sail on the river…the pass did not state upon what river we should sail upon so we thought we would go where we pleased…we sailed up North River [St. Johns River?]…kept pretty well under the banks of the river until we got by the Jacksonville picket post…we kept one eye out for rebels and the other…to the porpoises [which] were awful thick around us. They would follow right along…and half of the time almost out. Some of them were 8 or 10 feet long…the sharks were awful thick too all around us. We were…afraid that they would come up under…and upset us but they did not…". More. Both overall VG.
