A great war-date pencil inscribed Confederate soldier’s 2pp. folio., letter written by Pvt. Addison Lowery, I, 53rd N. C. Inf. Charlestown, WV., Aug. 23, 1864 to his mother concerning attacking Federal forces under Sheridan at Smithfield in the Shenandoah, in part: “…I have just come off of skirmish where I have been for the last two days. We attacked the Yankees the 21st near Smithfield and have driven them 2 miles…[we] are skirmishing with they now…they have a large force here and have thrown up breastworks. We have had severe skirmishing with them but thank god I came out unhurt…I have pretty good clothes at present but very dirty…I am getting very tired of this war…it seems like this summer campaign would never end…”. The battle at Smithfield, on Aug. 21, 1864, marked the opening of Jubal Early’s Valley campaign. With this engagement he cleared the Valley of Federal troops, but only for a short period of time. Interestingly, Lowery enlisted in the 53rd N. C. in 1862, was wounded and captured during the battle of Gettysburg, was paroled at David’s Island, N. Y., and was again captured, this time during the fall of Richmond April 2, 1865. Some spotting, else very good.
