A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Everett W. Miner, Co. C, 7th New Hampshire Vols., St. Augustine, Florida, Jan. 11, 1863, in part: "…today before yesterday Mr. S. Riddell & Charley Rawlet formerly sutler of the 47th Penn…Oscar French, Capt. Durgins waiter & Lt. Virgil Cate…went outside the lines…I wanted to go badly but could not without shutting up my store so did not go. They were calculating to come back at 3 p. m…came dark & they did not come…next morning they were among the missing so they sent out Co. D to…find any trace of them…yesterday a letter was sent over…that they were captured by…a large force of rebels…some say they will be carried to Lake City, others to Talahasee…there was an arm last night…there is three Co's of Confederates outside some miles picking up conscripts…they take all over 16 & all under 45…a story came over…that Gen. Grant had licked Bragg in Tennessee…and taken prisoners his whole left wing…the folks here feel pretty sore about it…we have quite a little harbor…1 steamer and four schooners…the n--gger Co. from this places going to Beaufort on the Boston…the Lindsey is a government schooner and came in here…loaded with beef cattle, sheep, hay, oats etc…I had…eat a dead horse as to eat this Florida raised beef…". On the last page of Everett's letter is a 1p. letter written by his father, Pvt. Leonard N. Miner, reading, in part: "…I have been to a negro meeting & heard the Lieut. Colonel [future BBG Joseph C. Abbott] speak to the colored folks. He is going to take off a Com[pany] of collared men…to Beaufort on the boat tomorrow. [The men he took formed the first Black volunteer regiment during the war and they became the 1st South Carolina Colored Volunteers.] It was very interesting to hear him talk to them…". Also included is the original patriotic transmittal cover addressed to Everett's mother. Near fine.
