CARPENTER, Louis Henry (1839–1916) was a United States Army brigadier general and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions in the American Indian Wars. During the American Civil War, he participated in at least fourteen campaigns primarily with the 6th U.S. Cavalry Regiment and as regimental commander of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry Regiment. Handsome period ink signed drawing, 4” x 4”, mounted to larger sheet, VG. Carpenter sketched one of his friends, a young man named Frederick Martin of the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry, as he was writing home “in his leisure moments”. Martin is pictured sitting on the ground intently writing. To the left of the drawing Carpenter has signed the drawing.
