A great war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt Lawrence "Wesley" Mix, Co. D, 12th United States Infantry, "Camp on the Weldon R. R., Va., Sept. 7, 1864, to his cousin Eva Knapp, in part: "I received your…letter…and I also received one from Henry [Lt. William Henry Mix 19th USCT, POW Crater, Va., 7/30/64]…he is far better situated than a great many of our prisoners are at the present time. I could tell you a tale of suffering that would make you shudder with fear…but I will not it occurs in the state of Georgia…and that is where the most of our prisoners are…we have some men in the Regt who have been there…do not ask me to tell you what it is…I have not heard of it happening in any other place only a certain place in Georgia. I think Henry will be exchanged or paroled sometime this fall…I saw Cousin Herman…his Regt was fighting the same day that we were, his Brigade protecting the left flank of the Fifth Corps at the time we were fighting for RR…we have a Capt. in command of the Regt…at Laurel Hill…we lost our major. The capt. now who is command…is [Philip William] Stanhope. The Capt. who was in command of the Regt when we came up here was killed on the 19th of August. The brigade commander is a Col. his name is Stone. [Gen. Charles P. Stone of Ball Bluff infamy. He resigned from the army one month later.] He come to us since fighting…for this road. The Brig. Gen. who was in command of us when we come up…was taken prisoner. His name was Gen. [Joseph] Hayes [WIA Gettysburg & Wilderness]. The division commander's name is Brig. Gen. [Romeyn] Ayers…[he] has been with us for over two years…the men all like him…for he is cool in a fight…when Herman was up…we went down to Alvin's Regt. [Alvin Worden 16th Michigan, WIA Wilderness] to see if he had got back from the Hospital…the rebels advanced on our pickets this morning, capture ten fifty of our men, killed one and wounded one, but it did not amount to anything. If the Rebels undertake to drive us from mere they will [see] some very hard fighting…for we are strongly fortified…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included.
