A good war-date Union general's clipped signature, adding rank as major general, commanding, "Win. S. Hancock". WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824-1886) known as "Hancock the Superb" during the war whose lenient Reconstruction policies led his failed Democratic presidential bid against James Garfield in 1880. Removed from an official letter. Attached at lower left corner is a ca. 1866 biography extolling Hancock's valor during the war with his beige promotion major general in the Regular Army. Overall VG
