A good collection of five (5) war-date Union cavalryman's letters, totaling approximately fourteen pages, on various stationery sizes, by Pvt. Donah Gillet 13th Penn. Cavalry and dated between December 1862 and June 1863. Most are routine in content and give the expected commentary on war and camp life, including this rather humorous passage he wrote from Winchester, Virginia on March 31, 1863 concerning his thoughts of doing pickets duty, in part: "…I do not think it much fun for a man to set two hours…armed to the teeth…watching to kill somebody or expecting…to be pierced through the heart with a ball…saying the Lord's prayer which is. Our father who art in Washington, Uncle Abe is thy name, thy victory wane, thy will be done in the South as it is in the North…lead us not into ambush, but deliver us from Jeff for thine is the power, the soldiers and negroes, for the space of three years. Amen…you must try to avoid the draft…and do not come down here and be treated worse than negroes or slaves…". All of the letters retain their original stamped transmittal covers. Overall expected toning and wear, else VG
