War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Wesley Given (1816-1870) of Sharpsburg, PA who served as a private and wagoner in the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, "3rd brigade Head Quarters, [Hampton, Va.], Feb. 11, 1862", in part: "…the 63rd went out on picket duty yesterday morning…we had religious meetings in the 63rd almost every evening last week. Quite a number manifested signs of Penitence although I heard of none crying earnestly for mercy nor…rejoining on acct. of pardoned sin…Dr. Marks…had recd. the names of 45 who had for the first time professed Faith…with some 110 old & cold professors of various breeds. [They] were formed into a religious association for religious worship…nine…desired to be baptized but only six…presented themselves when called…the sacrament of our Lord's supper was administered to about 100 persons. 4 of the number being ladies vig, Mrs Genl. Jamison, Mrs. Col. Hayes, Mrs. Hay matron of our hospital & some Lieut's lady…the audience met in two large tents being joined together…there is…some noted cases of awakening among our men…."
