A touching Union high command field printed order issued by the infamous Union General "Spoons or Beast" Benjamin Butler, 1p. 8vo., "Head Quarters, Department of Virginia and North Carolina, Army of the James, In the field, Va., Nov. 21, 1864" being the printed copy of a letter Butler wrote to Mr. John Clark of Norfolk, Virginia, reading, in part: "…thank you for calling my attention to the Fair for the benefit of the St. Mary's Catholic Orphan Asylum in your city [Norfolk, Va.]…please find enclosed my check for one hundred dollars…I am sure the officers and soldiers of my command will be pleased to subscribe liberally in aid of this deserving charity…many children unfortunately made orphans in this war…call for our deepest sympathies…charity…knows neither sect, party nor country…I know of no speedier way of bringing this matter to the attention of my command than in asking you to print this note…in which orders are distributed…".
