Fiorello Henry LaGuardia (December 11, 1882 - September 20, 1947) was the 99th Mayor of New York for three terms from 1934 to 1945 as a Republican. Previously he had been elected to Congress in 1916 and 1918, and again from 1922 through 1930. Irascible, energetic, and charismatic, he craved publicity and is acclaimed as one of the three or four greatest mayors in American history. Only five feet tall, he was called "the Little Flower" (Fiorello is Italian for "little flower"). ISP of Fiorella La Guardia, 10-1/2" x 14" overall, no date, but the young pose suggests most likely as a Congressman - late 1920's. On the mount it reads "For a leading pioneer in American Aviation and a grand & great citizen". One can speculate that he could have signed this for Charles Lindbergh after his historic flight across the Atlantic in 1927, and the subsequent ticket tape parade in NYC upon his return from Paris. Of course, we don't know for sure. A wonderful signed image....research could possibly unravel the mystery as to who the aviation pioneer was.
