A good collection of four (4) war-date Union soldier's letters totaling 12pp. (3) 8vo. & (1) 4to., written by Private Lawrence "Wesley" Mix, Co. D, 12th United States, to his cousin Eva Knapp, with some great commentary on being wounded and the Gettysburg Campaign, in small part: "…[Fredericksburg, Dec. 24, 62]…in the last fight we were not engaged with the enemy but were under their fire most of the time. Sykes Division lost about two hundred…killed and wounded…[Falmouth, May 12, 63]…our division covered the fight. The division lost between a hundred and fifty and two hundred men…[Culpeper, Oct. 9, 63]…we left the City [New York] on the morning of the 19th [after the Draft Riots]…the Regiment is nearly six hundred strong…it is the largest Regular Regiment…[Kettle Run, Va., March 7, 64]…I have not re-enlisted yet but there are a great many in the Regt. that have…[Brandy Station, May 2, 64]…I have over six months to serve yet which is time enough to get killed…marching until you drop dead, which I have seen several time last summer when we marched to Gettysburg. There was twenty five or thirty in the division that…dropped dead…in one day…it was a very hot day and we marched about thirty miles. Every once…a man carries at such a time seems a pound. I was at the battle of Gaines Mill…it was the second day of the Seven Days Battles…the next battle I was in was at Fredericksburg…Chancellorsville and the last one was Gettysburg…I have been in several skirmishes such as Mine Run…".
