War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt Lawrence "Wesley" Mix, Co. D, 12th United States Infantry, "Camp on the Weldon R. R., Va., Oct. 7, 1864, to his cousin Eva Knapp, in part: "…the Fifth Corps left their old position on the Weldon R. R. on the last day of Sept. We moved to the left. The First Division charged on a Rebel Fort and took it…the Second Division came up and formed on the right of them and built breastworks. The next morning the Rebel charged on the first brigade of the second division (which is the brigade that I belong to)…we drove them back. At one time they were within ten rods of our breastworks…we did not have a piece of artillery…it was raining quite hard at the time. My Regt lost three killed and one wounded. We have gained about two miles of ground…several Rebel forts…we have extended our line about two miles to the left of the Weldon RR. Gen. Grant is getting a great many new men and as fast as they come he extends his lines…he puts the new men in the works that the old soldiers have built and sends the old soldiers out to fight the Rebels and charge their forts…the old fellows don't like this much…if I am not mistaken the 16th Mich's time was out the middle of last month, that is, the men that did not reenlist…perhaps Alvin has gone home before this time…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. From the Mix/Knapp family correspondence offered elsewhere in this catalog. VG
