A great war-date Union home front letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by a certain Mr. "E." Gilsum, [N. H.], Nov. 15, 1864 to his friend Eva Knapp, in part: "…nearly all my old acquaintances & schoolmates have died in the army. It makes my shudder to think about it…what a cruel war this is…all of our best young men have got to fill a soldier's grave before we can have peace. I have passed another draft without being drawn…if God be with us we shall conquer the sum of all villainy…I say three cheers for Uncle Abe, Andy, God & the right; Don't you?…". From the Mix/Knapp family correspondence offered elsewhere in this catalog. VG.
