JAMES BANKHEAD (1783-1856) American general who entered the service the same day as Winfield Scott. During the War of 1812 he was promoted to Major and served on the staff of General Wade Hampton. He served heroically during the Seminole War of 1838 and gallantly served in the Mexican War. He was promoted brevet brigadier general for Vera Cruz and commanded the Department of Orizaba, Mexico. In 1848 he was appointed commander of the Department of the East with headquarters at Ft. McHenry. Finally, he was the uncle to Confederate General John Bankhead Magruder. War of 1812 official military letter, 1p. 4to., written by Major James Bankhead, "Fort Moutrie, South Carolina, Sept. 28, 1816 to Col. Robert Butler, in part: "I submit to your consideration the enclosed from Major Sneed…there are…several Prisoners subjects for a General Court martial who have been for some time in confinement…Lieut. Henderson of the Corps of Artillery has been under arrest for two or three months at Fort Johnson, N. Carolina…". Old tear repair, else VG
