A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 7pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Everett W. Miner, Co. C, 7th New Hampshire Vols., St. Augustine, Florida, Oct. 7, 1862, in part: "…a brig came in…the other day. She is considered to be a suspicious craft. Her crew are all Spanish. The[y] think she has…stuff to land for the rebels. They are going to search her…some contrabands came in…from Jacksonville and said our folks had took it. Jacksonville is up some way from the coast on the St. Augustine River. Our folks took it once last winter & then evacuated it. The rebels then fortified the bluffs…on the St. Johns and our gunboats have been firing upon them for some time & Sunday the nig---ers brought in news that it was taken…some folks who refused to take the oath & had been passed over the lines to join the rebels at Jacksonville came back…& said Gen. Brannan had taken it five gunboats and 4,000 men & was going to scour the whole state of Florida & clean the rebels…out…Jacksonville is about forty miles from here. We could hear the firing…[Friday, Oct. 10th]…I went out fishing the other night with the fishermen…each boat that goes has to have a guard go with it…that the fishermen do not communicate with the rebels. They fish with a net. We caught the boat about half full…we cached some that would weigh 8 or 10 pounds…a shark got into the net and broke it so we had to come a shore…Wm. Riddell the sutler is keeping house now. I board with them…Saml. Riddle & his wife board with a family who live over the store…". VG.
