War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., Oct. 5, 1862, in part: "…an Expedition started from here last week…some think they have gone to Florida some to Charleston…there was seventy five Negroes come across Broad River last week. They tell some hard things about the Rebels…they say that they have no salt and they are living on half rations and say they may as well give up trying to whip the Yankees…what do you think of President Lincoln's Proclamation. Don't you think it is a good one. The first of January will tell. If the Rebels come to his terms fighting is about over…". VG
