A good war-date Union Brevet Brigadier General's St. Patrick Day invitation, signed by Patrick R. Guiney, as colonel of the 9th Mass. Vols., 1p. 8vo., "Head Quarters 9th Mass. Vols., March 11, 1864," reading, in part: "The officers of this regiment present their compliments to Lt. Col. Thomas Sherman [later Brevet brig. gen. WIA Gaines' Mill, Va.] and lady and field and staff and ladies of the 22nd Mass. Vols…request their presence at this camp on the 17th inst. [at] the festival of St. Patrick's Day…". PATRICK R. GUINEY (1835-1877) brevet brigadier general who received a gunshot wound in the face, loosing his right eye in the process, at the battle of the Wilderness. VG.
