P.A.C.S. is relieved from duty at the seat of Govt. at this own request and will report to Genl. Kirby Smith Comdg...for assignment...” marked at bottom “2 copies”. Unusual document signed days after Lee’s surrender. Grant began his final advance on April 1 at Five Forks, captured Richmond on April 3, and accepted Lee's surrender at nearby Appomattox Court House on April 9.
