A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, Camp Griffin, Fairfax Co., Va., Feb. 15, 1862, in part: "…the acting [Hospital] Steward of his Regt. called on me…he said that the Regt was in good health…he said John Eddy [1st Vermont Cavalry] was left at Baltimore sick with the mumps…how did he like our Hospital? He thought we did not give him enough to eat…Mike Foley [3rd Vermont DOD 12/8/63]…was sent to the General Hospital in Georgetown…[Color Corporal] Epp. Howard [KIA Savage Station, Va., 6/29/62] has been made a Corporal. He has been a good soldier, not shirking from duty as many do…the magic compound sells well…a report was in circulation…that we were to go to Ky and join Gen. Buell…troops are being sent there from…Washington although the papers do not mention it…Wednesday night just after supper I heard loud cheering off to the right in the Penn. Reserve Corps, then the 6th gave three lusty cheers and a tiger, then the 2nd took it up, next the 5th took it up and soon an orderly arrived…[with the] news of the capture of Fort Donelson with 15,000 prisoners…the men are anxious to advance and give the rebels their dues…some troops are going down and shell out a rebel battery near Mount Vernon. The news of the capture of Fort Donelson caused great joy in the city…". Near fine
