A rare war-date Union Army of the Frontier field printed congratulatory announcement being "General Field Orders, No. 2, 1p. 8vo., "Headquarters, Army of the Frontier, Rhea's Mills, Ark., Dec. 12, 1862", reading, in small part: "The General commanding takes this occasion to express his heart-felt thanks to…his command, for their gallantry at the battle of Prairie Grove, on Sunday the 7th inst., which crowned the Army of the Frontier with…a brilliant victory…the enemy engaged, outnumbered us as three to one…they possessed every advantage in position…of their own choosing…no battle during the present war has been more determined and bloody…the stake was an important one. With our defeat, Western Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and the Indian country, would have been the prey of the rebel army…we have cause to rejoice…yet we cannot but feel saddened at the loss of our brave comrades…while we drop the tear of sympathy over their graves, we cannot forget that their death was a noble sacrifice…".
