A good war-date Union colonel's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by SAMUEL P. SPEARS (1815-1875) as colonel of the 11th Penn. Cavalry, future Brevet brigadier general who was WIA Five Forks, Va., April 1, 1865, "Head Quarters 11th Pa. Cavalry, Camp Suffolk, Va., Jany. 3, 1863," addressed to Capt. John Cassell, who incidentally resigned on the same day Spears was wounded, tersely reading, in part: "Your letter informing me of the resignation of 2nd Lieut. [Charles C.] Moore has been recd with much surprise. This proceeding was certainly informal and irregular…it should have received your endorsement, and then been referred to your Regt'l commander…and referred by him through the proper channels to the commander of the 7th Army Corps…nothing official has reached these Head Quarters…and upon the Regimental Records in my charge he stands Dec. 31st 1862 as 2nd Lieut of Co. C…SAMUEL P. SPEARS, Col: 11th Pa. Vol. Cavalry…". Apparently, Moore's resignation must have stuck because he is listed as having his resignation accepted on Dec. 24, 1862. Near fine.
