A group of war-date Union soldier's six (6) letters, totaling over 16 pp. 8vo., written by the Battey brothers of Ohio. There are four (4) letters written by 19 year old Private Peter Battey, Co. C, 96th Ohio Vols. who wrote in one letter from Bowling Green, Kentucky on Feb. 28, 1864 that he did not think he would live to see the end of the year. On Sept. 9, 1864 he sent home this stirring, and historically important news, reading, in part: "...we have some pretty grand news from the army. They have killed Old Morgan and took all of his staff and killed 50 of his men and took 200 prisoners and the rest scattered all thru the woods for life. Farmer Gillman is the man that killed him…three cheers for him…[Sherman] has got Atlanta. They got a lot of prisoners…killed was estimated at eighteen thousand killed and taken prisoners. That is a pretty good haul…". Plus there is one June 18, 1864 letter written by his brother Alfred J. Battey, also of the 96th Ohio written from University Hospital, New Orleans on the conditions in the hospital while he was recovering from wounds received on Nov. 3, 1863 at Grand Coteau, Louisiana and another from brother George written while he was still in the service in the autumn of 1865. One letter very light, else expected wear and soiling, overall VG.
