Wesley was wounded by a ball entering the side of the cheek, grazing his jaw bone [and] made a hole thro the side of his neck near the jugular vein causing it to bleed very profusely…no bones were broken & it was only a flesh wound…he could chew & smoke…Cousin Anson Worden [12th New York] was shot through his side just under his left arm, only a flesh wound though very sore…Cousin Alvin [B. Worden 16th Michigan also WIA Wilderness] had a little scratch above his knee the bullet going thro his pants & making a crease 3 or 4 inches long…in the flesh…we cousins have all had a slight taste of leaden pills…".
