A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, "Liberty Hall Hospital, 8 miles from Richmond, Va., June 7, 1862", in part: "…I came here one week ago last Tuesday and have never had so much to do since joining the Regt. We have 350 patients here. For a few days it was hard to do anything with them. Every barn, shed & house on the farm was full. We have since received tents etc…we have no bedding or clothing of any kind. Have torn down the fences and made bunks for the sickest. We have had but little medicine till today…Dr. Janes {commander of Camp Letterman, Gettysburg] came here and staid a few days. He refused…to stay here…he promised to take me with him…by Dr. Castleman 5th Wis. who…succeeded him neglected to have any one detailed in my place…today Surg. Gen. Brown was here and told Dr. C. he might keep any man…to help him…we have had 7 die since I came here-all of typhoid fever. I don't like it here…this is the birthplace of Patrick Henry…it is a pleasant place with a large two story house…well shaded with old Locust, cherry and button wood trees…the division marched down near Bottom's Bridge day before yesterday. They are across the river…I have been within hearing of two battles, viz. Porter's at Hanover and Casey's [at Seven Pines]. We could hear the firing quite plainly…". VG
