BUCHANAN, James (1791-1868) 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). Congressman (1821-31); Senator (1834-45); Secretary of State (1845-49). Elected President in 1856, amongst the growing crisis of slavery, his inactions led the country to Civil War. He was also the only President to remain a bachelor throughout his term. Document signed as Secretary of State, March 6, 1849, Washington, D.C., 4 pp., fine. Buchanan signs document appointing William Cranch as Chief Judge of the Circiut Court in the District of Columbia. Interior pages have signatures of clerks, and also William Cranch. Document measures 8" x 9-3/4", original seal and ribbon present. Buchanan's signature is bold and dark.
