A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., on patriotic "The Union and The Constitution" stationery, written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Annapolis, Oct. 15, 1861. On Sept. 28, 1861, the Confederate evacuated Munson's Hill with a skirmish breaking out near Vanderburgh's House where the 69th Penn. fired into their comrades of the 71st Pennsylvania killing nine and wounded many more. The letter, reads, in part: "…the 7th Connecticut and Fourth New Hampshire Regiment is encamped here on the same lot. There is seventy-five regiments going with us…for some southern port…Judson is dissatisfied, talks of leaving…there is about 975 men in our regiment, 96 in our company. Our Doctor's name is Dibble. Our chaplain, Rev. C. T. Woodruff…we are in a Secession town…but they don't trouble us much. There is 5 steamer ready to…carry us to the gunboats…had a battle at Alexandria where there was 40 men against 800. 40 Unionists drove the 800 secessionists and gained the victory and took several horse and arms, ammunition etc and cleared them out. There was 10 secessionist killed and none of the Union men hurt. It was a complete victory…went out and saw a Negro slave digging sweet potatoes. He gave me a dozen….". VG
