War-date Union soldier's letter, 4 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], "Cooper's Landing, S. C., Dawfuskie Island, April 7, 1862", in part: "…we have not made any attack on Fort Pulaski yet…while on duty in the night we saw what we supposed to be a rebel skulking about. He had a dark lantern…he got within hailing distance…we hollered 'Who comes there' and he runs off as fast as he could. The grass being so tall he was out of sight before we could get a shot at him…he was trying to see…how many pickets we had out…this plantation we are on is owned by a Union man by the name of Stoddard…we expect to go to Tybee…before long…while I am writing this I can hear heavy cannons firing. There is a battle somewhere…a secesh gun boat came down the river and one of our gun boats has attacked it…we are selected for Coast Guards…".
