JUMPER, John (1820-1896) Seminole Chief. During the Civil War, the Seminole Nation was divided as some bands sided with the Confederacy and some with the Union. During this period, the Seminole Nation had two recognized head chiefs. John Jumper served as the head chief for the Confederate Seminoles. He attained the rank of Lt. Colonel of the Mounted Seminole Volunteers in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed, “Col. John Jumper Principal Chief Seminoles” 2p. octavo, Seminole Camp, June 30, 1865, with cover addresed to Messrs. Johnson & Grimes, of Sherman Texas, and reads in most part: “...I recived not long since several wagon loads of corn by your order and am sending for more. It would no doubt be more desirable to you and spare much trouble to send down a large train all together at a time but oweing to my People being scattered about so and the scarcity of transportation among them renders this impossible. Therefore I have told such as had wagons to go wherever they could & they will no doubt trouble you much for orders...please make such arrangements as will enable them to get their corn whenever they go for it. Further I understand you desire paying such persons...let Mr. Charles Rickets haul cattle for beef for the same in corn or would replace the cattle if so please let me know. As the bee fwas furnished at 8 cts. per pound let me know what the corn would be held at pr. Bushel...” VG.
