A great war-date Union paymasters letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Paymaster's Clerk, George W. Fernald, formerly of the 82nd New York Volunteers who was wounded in the chest at Gettysburg, on "Pay Department, Department of the South" stationery, Hilton Head, S. C., Nov. 12, 1864, in part: "…we touched at Fortress Monroe to take on some more troops…we did not fall in with anymore pirates (alias merchantmen)…after leaving Fortress Monroe we met three of our gunboats escorting a captured blockade runner loaded with cotton…[at] Cape Hatteras…we saw three steamers but could not get near enough to speak…Hilton Head…is very sandy & there are plenty of negroes here. Our troops are distributed about on the different islands. Hilton Head is the head quarters of the army of the South under Genl. Foster. St. Helena Island is the head Quarters of the Navy that is opposite of us…no one does anything here but for Green Backs & pretty high ones at that…there are a great many vessels lying at anchor which is a grand sight…all of them lit up at night…we have not heard how the Presidential election went yet, but I know it went off O. K. we took a vote on the steamer off Hatteras which stood thus Lincoln 186, McClellan 74. There were a great many who did not vote at all…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine
