DAVIS, Jefferson (1808-1889). Leader of the Confederate States of America, serving as its President, during the American Civil War, serving as President for its entire history. Previously a Senator and United States Secretary of War under Democratic President Franklin Pierce. Signed Inscribed Photograph, "Your friend - Jefferson Davis," undertrimmed at the top else VG. The vignetted image is backmarked, Tanner & Van Ness, Lynchburg, Virginia. The inscription and signature are well written in brown and are very clear within the lower open area of the photograph. A prior owners notation "Jeff Davis" in pencil on the reverse and a central notation above the makers black imprint.
