A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, Camp Griffin, Fairfax Co., Va., Jan. 15, 1862, in part: "…I have not seen many rebels yet, those that I saw were very poorly clothed. I saw a little boy the other day who had been living among the rebels. He said he did not like the rebel soldiers and that he used to hide when he saw them coming. One day he told some of them that he was a 'Yankee' and was for the Union. This made them mad and one of them was going to shoot him but the others told him not to. He said he was glad to get to his father out of reach of the rebels…you should like to be here and see a make believe fight. You would see the men on horses ride towards the soldiers on foot…and see the cannons firing…the soldiers fire back and then charge bayonets on the cannon and drive away the cannoneers …it is a splendid sight but…you would like to see a real fight and hear the shells and screaming minnie balls all around you…".
