War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt Lawrence "Wesley" Mix, Co. D, 12th United States Infantry, "Camp on the Weldon R. R., Va., Sept. 27, 1864, to his cousin Eva Knapp, in part: "…since we have been here we have received about eighty recruits which is more men than there was left after the last fight which we had…on the 21st of last month. I was on picket a few days since when the Rebels made a dash on our lines and drove us back a short distance when we advanced and drove them back to their old position…there was several men killed and some wounded…there was about twenty bullets sent after me but none of them hit although some of them came quite close to me…I have not heard from Henry since I wrote you last...". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. From the Mix/Knapp family correspondence offered elsewhere in this catalog.
