EVERETT Edward (1794-1865). Orator, clergyman, and senior who gave the principle address at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg. Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp., Boston, March 21, 1864, to Congressman John D. Baldwin, in part: "When the commission on military education visited Leicester Academy last summer, I was very favorably impressed with the appearance of young Mr. Hayden, who was then acting as first lieutenant in the military corps of the academy, and I received a very good account of him from the principal. The young man is very desirous of entering the Military Academy at West Point, and I cheerfully write....recommending his case to your favorable consideration." As no one named Hayden entered West Point until 1888 it seems this young man was doomed to disappointment! A fine letter.
