Confederate General JAMES J. ARCHER (1817-1864) who served in the U. S. Army during the Mexican War and out West before the war. Original colonel of the 5th Texas and brigade commander in the Army of Northern Virginia, leading his unit from the Seven Days Campaign to Gettysburg where he was captured on July 1, 1863. Archer died during the siege of Petersburg shortly after being exchanged in October 1864 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. Document Signed, 1p. oblong folio, "J. J. Archer", as captain in the 9th United States Infantry, Campan Lake, W. T., June 30, 1859, being an "abstraction of provisions issued…to friendly Indians while en route from Fort Sincoe W. T. to Lake Okanakane W. T. by 2nd Lt. Chas. G. Harker [future Union general] 9th Infy.". Near fine
