Another very sad war-date home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Kate [Knapp], Cuba, N. Y., Feb. 22, 1865 to her cousin Eva Knapp, in part: "…the first of Jan. my dear husband started for Va. after the precious remains of our patriot brother…we all felt as though we could not have a failure & yet we dare not trust our hopes…after nearly three weeks…he reached father's bringing that precious form…& much to our surprise not decomposed at all although a white mould had formed over his face…he was readily recognized by friends & acquaintances. We saw him nicely buried which is a great consolation to us at home but such a comfort to the dear brothers yet in the service…one brother is in Elmira & the other in front at Petersburg…I almost imagine that the light is breaking through the thick clouds of war…Sherman is accomplishing great things…will not their strongholds be broken& peace be declared…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. From the Mix/Knapp family correspondence offered elsewhere in this catalog. Near fine.
