George Washington Battersea Curtain Tieback or Drawer Pull, Circa 1780s-1790s. Manufactured in Battersea, England, these enameled brass items were often decorated with American subjects for the export market. This example features an excellent likeness of Washington in military uniform, with his name on a streamer above. Condition is beautiful, with no chips or cracks often found in these enameled surfaces. Measures 2-1/2" in diameter. Very few of these have survived in this superb condition. Heritage Auctions sold an example when they offered the Gillette collection in their March 2008 Americana auction. That example, lot #48002, realized $3,585.00. That example, albeit a fine example, did not have the deep rich colors that this example has.
