War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., August 15, 1862, in part: "…today…military honors are paid in respect to the late Ex President Martin Van Buren…it commenced here [with] firing of guns in the morning and firing one every half hour through the day and at sunset a National Salute of (34) guns. The soldiers were formed in line for dress parade at ten o'clock and the President's order in regard to the death of Ex President Van Buren was read. Van Buren was a great politician and a Douglas Democrat, a lover of his country. His name ought to be remembered throughout the country. The officers in several regiments are to ware crape on their arm for…ten days in honor of the deceased…I hope Connecticut will not have to resort to drafting…and hope Conn. will furnish her quota…without drafting a man…I was surprised…that John Kelly had enlisted. He is the last man I should have thought of enlisting…".
