A rare war-date Confederate document, 1p. 8vo., printed at the "War Department, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, Richmond, Va., March 13, 1862", being General Orders No. 14, reading, in full: "Gen. Robert E. Lee is assigned to duty at the seat of Government; and under the of the President, is charged with the conduct of Military operations in the Armies of the Confederacy." Inscribed on the lower left corner in red military ink: "Head Quarters, 1st Brigade." Essentially this was the desk job that Lee was dreading, but in this role he full backed the Confederate conscription act which ensured longer life to the Confederacy. In just over two weeks after this document was issued Lee would become the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and leave the desk behind. Interestingly, the period docket on the verso (ca, March 1862) mistakenly notes that this document made him commander in chief of the Confederate armies, but that would not be the case until February 1865. Toned, else VG
