The first three items pertain to the retrieval and shipment home of the body of Bushrod Hoge, who was killed at the Battle of Perryville (KY) on October 8, 1862. To include: Union officer's war-date letter signed "M Hoge," Assistant surgeon, 52nd Ohio Infantry, Camp Dennison, Ohio, October 21, 1862, to his father, reading, in part: "…After making the necessary arrangements I sent him (Brother-in-law B.D. Brown)with money and everything necessary to procuring the remains and send them home…he was just leaving Louisville for the Battle field which I expect he has reached by this time…the grave was fenced in and carefully marked…He will get a metallic case in Louisville…if he did not lay long on the field before burial there will be no difficulty in obtaining it…I expect to come home with the body…" Very good…plus; Partially printed document, one page, oblong 8vo, Louisville, Kentucky, October 20, 1862, a receipt for the coffin. Very good…Plus; Manuscript document, one page, oblong 8vo, Louisville, October 25, 1862, a receipt for shipping the body home to Ohio, very good…plus; Partial Union soldier's war-date letter missing first and last pages, by a Hoge family member, 4pp., 8vo, after the Battle of Chickamauga, September 1863, reading, in part: "…But we held the field until midnight with quite a loss(this took place on Sunday Sept. 20th) our division fell back at dark being entirely out of ammunition leaving some of the wounded & all the dead on the field. The whole army fell back to Chattanooga the next day (21st) to fortify & await reenforcements. Rosecrans fought nearly the whole Confederate army our Brigade fought Longstreets Virginia troops who are better fighters than Braggs men…the Rebbs had sharp shooters stuck around in trees &c we lost our Captain Zachary…he was killed dead by a shot through the temple…We lost 2 Captains killed & one wounded…C. Abner Gregg was hurt about as bad as I was by a grape shot but is all right & with us now…" Very good…plus; Civilian war-date letter by S. M. Hoge, 4pp., 4to, Damascus< California, March 1, 1863, to his sister, n.p., reading, in part: "…poor Bushrod was killed at Perryville from what I see…I have not heard anything as it regards the Belmont (OH) troops at the battle of Murfreesboro under Rosecrans but I should judge the loss was very heavy…It appears the 3rd Ohio and 88th Indiana had the honour of the first to carry a part of the rebel works at Stony river kiling a good many… Joseph Hooker he is an old Californian the people are verry proud of him he goes by the name of fighting jo here in the state…California has been well off so far…she is helping Massachusetts to fill he quota…". Very good condition.
