A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. David T. Copeland, Co. I, 3rd South Carolina Vols., "Camp near Centreville, Virginia, Advance Forces, First Brigade, Oct. 29, 1861", in part: "…I have not heard from the Yankies now in several days…they have give out going to Richmon[d] by the way of Manassas…of the great victory at Leesburg…they have taken six and seven hundred prisoners in that fight. I had the pleasure of going over the battle ground of the 18th and 21st of July…it is rite smart sight…to sea the Yankies leying over the ground not buried yet and the white bones shining everywhere for a mile or two. The trees is badly shot to pieces. I saw the spot where General Bee of S. C. was killed and Colonel Fisher of N. C., also Col. Barte of Georgia. He has a large round marble post…on the spot where he fell. The words on it is, "they have killed me boy, but never give up the fight." I have several pretty little rocks that I got on the battle ground…our Regt. goes out on picket today…seven miles…to fairfax C. H. We stay out three days and nights without tents and the frost is as thick every morning…". Also included is the letter's original Stars and Bars design Confederate patriotic cover with a "Due 10" postal mark with Copeland's regimental docketing appearing in the upper right margin. Missing back flap, else VG. Negligible tape stains effect the verso of the last page, else VG
