The enemy was playing on us with 13 pieces of cannon [Ruggles' battery]…the fire…lasted about 2 hours then we was ordered to abt face and march…a quarter of a mile, there we made a charge on them again…we fought till five o'clock and then we was surrendered…they as firing on us from 4 ways…there was a good many of us killed. I had my cartridge box shot off from between my body and arm. It was done by a cannon ball. The enemy marched us about 4 miles into a corn field where they camped us for the night…between the rain and our siege guns I could not rest and the mud was 6 inches deep. The next morning we was on our march for Corinth. We took the cars there for Memphis. We arrived in Memphis on Tuesday. We left that place for Mobile…the men in Memphis called us all the names they could, but the women shed tears for us. When we left they would come to the cars and give us pies and cakes…P. O. Address: John F. Fisher. Paroled Prisoner, Benton Barracks…leave out the company and regiment…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. VG.
