War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], "Dawfuskie Island, S. C., April 14, 1862", in part: "…yesterday (Sabbath) we marched to Hague's Point…it was done to see the strength of the soldiers…we took our guns, cartridge box and belt…weighing fifty pounds…the Union flag now waves over Fort Pulaski…at Cooper's Landing [we] could hear the reports of the guns. They commenced firing on Thursday…at sunrise and fired once in a while…but at eight o'clock the firing began to go faster and there was one a minute all day…up to ten o'clock…at day light the firing commenced again more rapid…they fired some of their largest 16 inch shells from Tybee Island…[at] 2 o'clock in the afternoon…the firing ceased and the white flag was raised over the fort and they gave up, surrendered and our men went over to the fort and raised the Stars and Stripes. The 7th Conn. Reg. are on Tybee and two company of them were the first to land at the fort and there was 400 men in the fort…were all taken prisoners. There was sixteen guns and eight mortars. There was not a man killed…Fort Pulaski…now belongs to the Union…our men are throwing up batteries in the rear of Fort Jackson…they had a great battle at Island No. 10…our troops under General Halleck and the Rebel troops under General Beauregard…were the victories…our troops gained the day by the loss of 1800 men and three thousand Rebels killed and thirty thousand prisoners among them General Beauregard…we have one of the vilest Rebel ever created…Old Jeff Davis will catch it before long…".
